A Few Words About Mom (reading given at her service 12months ago)

The NFL season has just come to an end and my wife and I just watched a great game where the NY Giants won the Super Bowl and the Lombardi Trophy. Congrats G-Men!

As I think back to last years game I reflected where we sat last year at this very time.  It was a wonderful surreal experience where we just hosted a SB party with my family and celebrated a Packers win.  However it was bittersweet as just a day before that, all of us had gone thru a very painful difficult time - My Mom succumbed to her illness.  As we prepared for her funeral I wrote down some words that I hoped would comfort my family and her friends. In remembering her passing I wanted to reveal the following reading that I spoke at her service and hope in its way to maintain that connection. Also it's why I feel so inspired to continue my support of research to all early cancer detection sciences.

A Few Words About Mom
On the surface, Joyce Marie Plamann might not have impressed many as an extraordinary person.  For my Dad, Brothers, and I growing up with her – she was always a loving wife and mother, with a good and kind soul.  But beneath her mortal cover, she was truly remarkable in many ways.  In her heart was excessive love and unyielding faith.
Over those last days with her, the family gathered to her side.  We reminisced, kind of like a trip thru our fondest memories of Mom.  What was amazing is the warmth and joy that filled that room as she neared the end.
My brothers and I went back to time of children when she was the great goalkeeper trying to keep her three boys in check while also protecting us from the wrath of our Father.  So many times especially as we grew into those teenage years, Mom would cover the cracks and holes in the doors with decorative cut-outs.  Some of you may have noticed her photo collage with footprints.  The story behind that… Well to hide those incidents of destruction from dear old Dad, she would cut out shapes like footprints and cover those dents that came from our fighting, then calmly tell him on his arrival home it was just to jazz up the place – now don’t they look nice.  Dad would hardly notice, nod his head and say sure.
Although we knew she cherished her boys, we also always knew she would have enjoyed having a daughter or two.  Oddly that is exactly what she had in her final days as my brother Mike’s wife Bev, and my wife Jen would never leave her side staying and taking all those third shifts to hold her hand and comfort her.  I can only imagine the bonding experience they both take with them.  But ladies, we knucklehead men of hers could never fill her heart the way you guys did (although I will say to consider doing a dye job on her hair was a bit over the top – glad good sense stopped you).  From the bottom of our hearts, thank you both for this most precious gift of love to our mother!
I was amazed that when unable to really speak but maybe a word or two, she still had a wit to her and a sense of humor that would make us all laugh and smile.  An example of this came just hours before her final breath – when told that her boys and my dad were going to be left with her alone for a few minutes while her daughter-in-laws stepped out she uttered in a quirky “oh no”.
In her mind was the everlasting thought “how can I give?”  She sought always to be a friend, a helping hand, a uniter, never wanting to be a burden or a divider.  Her soul was warmed by the fire of hope and lifted with the excitement of joy.  Every day she spent on this earth she knew was a gift from God and she willingly passed that on to all whom she touched.
I don’t suppose to speak for her.  I don’t have to as her life spoke plainly:  Keep your faith, it will never fail you.   Hold all you know in love closely and dearly and give all that you can, with all your heart every hour of every day.  That is the path to love and peace.
I know my mom would not want us to be said, though, it is impossible to let her pass without many tears.  But please pledge with me today because I know she would want it this way, remember her only in joy and happiness.  That is a gift she leaves for all of us.
Keep her in your heart and hold on tight.

Tough string of luck- bad things come in three's

Boy can you beat this early burst of Spring temps- WOW!!! Bet you guys wonder what's up- trying to find a positive is tough with this little stretch of bad luck.
Time to complain!!!

My current issue- I may have either sprained my right foot or broke my little toe on it. Tuesday I was distracted & not paying attention while dealing with some naughty kids and the best way to say it is, I rammed my foot into an in-movable chair in our living room. So... no walking or spin workouts for the time being while I heal up. I hope to try my water aerobics session tomorrow nite but as of now I will need to skip any spin or walking efforts for the next few days. If not better by Friday I will be making a visit to the doctor office. Also both wife & I have bad colds and I did not get a workout on Monday- other than shoveling driveway.
Add in that our fridge almost started a fire on Saturday nite. You never know how much stuff is in a fridge until you have to empty it in a rush- YUCK!!- wont be a easy garbage pickup for our guy this week-
You know the old saying is bad things happen in three's so let's hope this is it for me, the rest of the 2012 (fingers crossed!!) OUCH!!! - just one of those crappy stretches we all call part of life- things can only get better tomorrow !

Back from Sanibel FL - Time to get on track

Been awhile since last post, - I was out of town for most of the week at a sales meeting for my company in the warm climate of Sanibel Florida. Had wonderful weather and enjoyed getting reacquainted with my sales reps and management. The trade-off was being away from my family and I'm very happy to be home. I don't travel well!

Strange winter continues and think we missed that zero weather week this year, keep those fingers crossed.

My wife was very understanding and picked me up a new iPhone4 to replace the old iPhone3 I sucked up in the snow blower- (SEE Pic ) thanks sweetheart. It made it easier to stay connected to the kids with that cool)  'facetime' feature.

Kept up my daily workouts while away but unfortunately caught a nasty head cold at end of trip and needed to lay low today and probably tomorrow. Will get back on track this coming week - only about 20 weeks before doing my cross-state attempt!

Friday the 13th arrived on Sunday- Packers Season is over -darn'it!! But Happy Birthday Honey!!!

Interesting week- Started to tally my workouts for the wife's work challenge at KC "Minute to Win it" . Pretty good total of 557 minutes 1st week or nearly 10 hours! - yeah baby!

Celebrated my wife's birthday on Saturday with a couple of delicious lite pizza's only 4 points a piece( we are doing weight-watcher's together) The Kids and I gave her some quiet time and went shopping for her B-day gifts for a couple of hours so she could enjoy a on-demand movie on TV.

Lost my iPhone in the snow at the end of my driveway and then found it with my snow blower Friday morning the 13th (see my facebook site for pic) OUCH!!!

Very excited about going to Lambeau to watch the Green'N Gold.  My Bud and I tailgated at Anduzzi's Bar (good pizza and Beer) there goes my diet!    Seems bad things come in pairs because it was a difficult game to watch my favorite team- Giant's 37  Pack 20 - worst defeat by GB in their playoff history (guess this goes on my bucket list).

Looking forward to a business trip next week to the warmer climate of Ft Meyers FL. Leave Monday morning and back on Thursday Night- so skipping a week updating site.

Everybody be well and stay warm!

OOPS correction last post- 4th SUPERBOWL for the Packers - going for #5

Out with the old in with the New - Goals and Accomplishments

First post in 2012 which I sincerely do not believe is our last (fingers crossed)!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Holiday season and enjoyed special moments with their loved ones. To start the New Year I wanted to reflect by listing my view of some 2011 milestones for our little part of the world (remember I'm a sports fan going in) and setting new ones for myself and family for the next 12 months.

2011 -

1. Our Beloved football teams receive national attention- Badgers lose to TCU in Rose Bowl and the 6th seed Packers win their 3rd Superbowl!
     *personal life- bittersweet as My Mother passed away Feb 3rd and after hosting my family for the game we had her Funeral the next Day

2-.New Governor Walker ticks off Democrats (they leave rather than vote) and Madison is inundated with protesters.
      *personnel life- I beg my wife to allow me to do a memorial of sorts in honor of my Mom and raising Cancer detection awareness

3- Spring and Summer weather brings so many High wind/Tornado's and hail storms to our area keeping roofing contractors busier than usual.
      *personal life- My Family huddled in the basement for one April storm that caused enough hail damage we are now scheduled for getting a new roof after this winter. I am trying to talk my wife into letting me walk the State- up to 5 mile combo walk/jogging sessions - 'OUCH' my right knee starts to hurt after a workout.

4- Brewers playing great Ball, Democrats still upset but returned from hiding!
      *personal life- We start making plans for buying a camper, getting Kids a sitter for the summer and I am no longer running. Participated in a my wife's work sponsored compilation month of June 'Iron Man wellness event' - 30 days to complete. 2.4 mile swim, 112 miles bike, 26 miles walked -  I started June 1st , finished June 26th - time just under 16 hours.  Convinced wife to let me do the trek across Wisconsin. she starts working on a idea to create a blog for me ( I am technologically challenged)

5- Brewers leading the Division first time since 1982!! NFL lockout finally ends NBA lockout begins and we are going to have pro-football , GO Pack! Recalls in place for several people and Democrats start coordinating Governor Walker recall attempt
     *personal life-  Back to school time arrives for kids, great camping summer! plenty of Pool time and Rainbow playset fun. My Daughter turned 9 (against better judgement promise her a puppy).   Up to 3 - 4 walks per day 4-5 days a week 14- 18miles each day. Right knee is really hurting- schedule 1st doctor visit.

6- BrewCrew wins Divison, wins first playoff rd against AZ then loses to Cardinals. Republican candidates emerge to run against Obama. Odd mix of- Cain, Bachmann, Perry, Paul, Gingrich, Huntsman, Romney (Trump and Palin looking in).-hope I did not miss anybody -geewhiz!  Promising Badger Football team disappoints with back to back losses.
     *personel life- receive devastating news that I will need a total knee replacement- duldrums to follow, then perk up with moving forward on buying a camper and as 1st step buy new truck for Wife as her primary vehicle (she was so pleased- HaHa!) Kid's back in school and I start PT on knee along with slowing my walks down to less than 3-4 miles 3x per week. Offset lack of walk training with biking and swimming. Oldguywalk blog is launched.

7- Packers win 13 in a row then lose to big underdog KC. Recall atempt begun by organizers. Badgers regain opportuinty and win out for another Rose Bowl in 2012. NBA is locked out-(who cares) and we have an unusally warm early and late Fall season with a very warm beginning of winter. Dusting of white on Christmas Day
      *personel life- My little boy is now 6 with a big hayride Birthday party just before halloween. Decide on the camper we want and buy it for a huge family christmas gift -see 'outback'- model 312bh on websearch( you will see what I mean). I get a second opinon on knee which confirms future need for knee replacement (bone on bone on inside of right leg joint) Doc gives me an steroid injection and tells me to take it easy. I begin with YMCA non impact exercise sessions 5x per week (spin stationary bike and water areobic classes) cleared by doctor to walk again but carefully - up to 7-8 miles 2x walks per day 3 to 4 times per week.
NOTE-  MY DAUGHTER MADDIES 6 WEEK OLD  PUP ( LILLY) ARRIVES ON NEW YEARS DAY!!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
2012 My short list
Many of my resolutions are typically not attainable (like winning the lottery) so for my blog I plan on only listing realistic reachable ones.
  1. Train for and complete the Oldguywalk in June
  • Find supporting company sponsors for this effort
  • produce promo materials hopefully donated (i.e.. posters, t-shirts, car magnets, those types of things)
  • Ask for and get some volunteers to help
  • reach my goal of donating to the LUNGevity Foundation $5000.00
     2.   Lose at least 30 - 50 pounds
  • should get a good jump start with another my wife's work exercise challenges at KC (Jan-Feb timeframe)
  • Wife and I doing WeightWatchers will help.
  • Completing the Oldguywalk won't hurt either
     3. Enjoy my family time (most important of all)
  • camping with our new camper
  • having the puppy become a member of the clan
  • Be a better Dad and Husband (taking my wife's cue on this one)
     4. Cheer on my sports teams
  • while they win Super Bowl, World Series, and Number 1# rankings for Badgers- ok this one is a bit of a stretch!!!
     5.  Celebrate New Years Eve & coming of 2013
  • no more doomsday talk!!!!!
